ASF funding for music lessons

DR_2015 November 23, 2018 14:17
Long shot I'm sure, but does anyone have any experience of accessing the ASF to fund music lessons? My son has ADHD and other sensory needs, and has just started these - a month in and already I can see a real impact. Trouble is, they're quite expensive! I've looked at the guidelines online, and can't quite see it these are covered or not. I'm guessing they would need to be via an Ofsted approved provider and would need to demonstrate a therapeutic output. I can't find anything online that specifically links music lessons to ADHD, or if the ASF is the right place to go. Any suggestions?

This is something Pluto knows about too! I can’t remember the details but when my daughter was younger there was music lessons on offer as part of the range of things for SEN in the area - I can’t remember any more than that I’m afraid! Try googling music therapy as that might give you a clue if you could stretch what you are doing to meet the criteria - but I suspect it might have to be provided by a music therapist - I’m sure you’re right about the ofsted regulation as we had that issue with the ASF Worth a try though!

We had a year of music therapy funded by ASF. It was really beneficial for my son but nothing like music lessons (free expression with sound, no instructions about what/how to do anything). We are now about to begin music lessons funded through a Personal Budget through my son's EHCP - might be worth asking if your child has an EHCP for us it wasn't specifically recommended by any professional but we argued our own case.

I know this is a bit late, but I've only just rejoined AUK and found this. Not ASF exactly but we asked school to use some of our AD's Pupil premium to pay for her flute lessons as it's good for her self-esteem and keeps her calm.
