which agency?

Hi All,Hardly ever use this post, as I am a single adopter who adopted from the UK. But I have a query on behalf of a friend who is interested in inter-country adoption. She and her partner are making initial enquiries but have been told by their local authority that they won''t be considered , because of her medical history - she has had, quite dreadfully, 2 separate episodes of cancer, quite unrelated to each other. She is now quite well, and has an excellent prognosis, though she is still having annual checks. Now, it may be tht this will scupper their chances - or at least delay them when they don''t have time on their side - but she is of the impression that with intercountry adoption that you HAVE to go with your local authority. Is that true?? I had thought you could go with whichever agency you chose, but the rules may be different for intercountry I guess??Any light on the subject gratefully received! Thanks.

Hi Bovary,No, you don't have to go with your LA if you live near an agency who is accredited with assessing/training adopters for intercountry adoption. There are some very good agencies who are able to carry out home studies for intercountry adoption. They tend to only cover smallish areas of the country, so your friend may be lucky enough to live near one of these. I think there was a list on the DCSF website (now the DfE).The thing with intercountry adoption is that adopters have to be approved according to adoption guidelines in this country, and also fit criterea for the sending country (age, marital status, health, ability to pay, religion,)- so her cancer scares may unfortunately be an issue - but it is certainly worth exploring.alison123

On the home page, there is a 'Find an Agency' button under Explore on the bottom left hand side.If you put in local cities, it could come up with a range of agencies, though it doesn't seem to sort by type of adotion, just geographical areal
