Introductions-how long?

MrSnoodle September 1, 2012 17:22
A few weeks ago we were matched with a 4 year old for long term fostering. We have met him twice now but he doesn''t know he is coming to us permanently yet. His SW wants to tell him after our next visit and then the introduction phase to continue until 3/4 of the way through October. Our SSW wants to speed it up so that he moves in with us in 3 weeks time and not to tell him until the last minute as he is a very anxious child and she thinks telling him too soon will make him more anxious. From your experience which do you think is the best approach?

either way could work depending how its handled. normally it would be the three week approach but i moved a little one on in may (much longer) and she had had prolonged extended contacts twice a week with a family member over a 4 month period so when the go ahead finally was given for the move it meant she was already comfortable with family member and needed no 'intros' as such, we just moved her and she settle really really well and very quickly. but my almost 3 year old moving to adoption will get the traditional approach and move after 2-3 weeks intros and hopefully that will work as well too. so not much help really!! tiddly was quite a timid child initially and the extended approach worked wonders for her. was a pain for me as her fc and for family memebr and only set up thus becoz of the court processes involved, but it actually turned out to be a sound approach for moving on a small person.
