Discriminating employers

helbop November 21, 2012 15:00
I''m so mad!!!!!My DW and I are starting introductions with our LO on Monday and my employers are telling me I can''t take paternity leave as I am ''a lady''!! They were trying to force me to take adoption leave (which they dont pay!).I had to remind them of their own paternity leave policy and say that they were discriminating against me for them to back track and allow me to take paternity. On top of everything else that''s going on at the mo preparing for our son''s arrival, it''s tipped me over the edge.Just makes me so angry that we had to be put through the situation completely unnecessarily. (feeling slightly better now, rant over)

My understanding is that you can take paternity leave of up to two weeks no matter if same sex couple or not. That is the statutory leave.EligibilityOrdinary Paternity LeaveYou must have worked for your employer for at least 26 weeks by either:the end of the 15th week before the start of the week when your baby is duethe end of the week you’re told you’re matched with your adopted childthe date your child enters Great Britain (if you’re adopting from overseas)You must also be one of the following:the biological father of the childthe mother’s husband or partner (including civil partnerships)the child’s adopterthe husband or partner (including civil partnerships) of the child’s adoptergood luck with introductions and your LO,anita

Hi Anita, yep, that's our policy! shame payroll didn't know anything about it and chose to discriminate against me until I brought it to their attention.Shame on them for not doing their research!! Managers are emailing round like blue arsed flies now that I've brought it to their attention and doing a bit of damage limitation...which is good but still annoyed that we had to go through it.Had a glass of wine now and tomorrow is another day
