Overseas checks

Jayne September 30, 2020 19:21

Hi everyone, is anyone currently in stage 1/ past stage 1 that had to have overseas dbs checks due to previously working abroad? Understandably they are checks that need doing yet our social worker can’t point us in the right direction. The embassy emails on gov website don’t work and there’s no online forms. Any help would be so appreciated

I was going to suggest searching the archives however ... not sure you’ll have much luck given this error message ?‍♀️

It has been asked before ... maybe a search through prospectives board?

I think it depends a bit on the country and what can be reasonably expected. Both my husband and I needed one from a European country and that was no problem to get. However, I also needed one from much further away and the embassy never got back to me. Our sw said that was fine. I tried and there wasn't anything else I could do. Nobody asked at the two panels.

Thankyou that’s what I needed to hear, I was panicking that we’d never get them back and we’d never be allowed to adopt! Did you email embassies for your European checks?

Hi Jayne, I had to do 3 criminal checks. Two of them were European countries. One I did online and the other one I went to the consulate and they helped me with the necessary paperwork. There was a small fee involved for both. I didn't have to wait long to receive a reply/document. The 3rd country was where I was born and I did this online via the police force. Hope this helps you. Things may take a bit longer because of Covid.

Hi Jayne,

From personal experience, I had to get a check from Portugal - it took a few weeks (going via the consulate if I remember rightly) and then filling and online form via the local Police force.

Donatella - thanks for highlighting this error. We have flagged with the technicians who are working on fixing it now.

Best wishes,
Charlotte .

It all depends on the country and the circumstances of your time abroad. I didn't have to get one for a university year abroad (it was implied it was 'covered' under the checks they had done) but our VA wanted me to get one for a few months I spent teaching abroad. They wouldn't cover the cost so I argued against it as it would have cost over £100 plus a day off work (would have had to go to the embassy in person). In the end they accepted a reference from the teacher I worked with. I would have done it if it was a dealbreaker for approval panel but it was pitched as "some LAs may not be happy at matching stage" and I decided to risk a delay at matching if the prospective LA said it had to be done then.
