Not happy with School - please help

seahorse24 July 13, 2013 03:56
Our little pumpkin is behind in school in all area''s. They say pumkin is around 6 months behind at that. Pumkin has had the 1st assessment and due the second one that may lead to a statement we have already had meetings with the school as were not happy with the 1st report, and the support pumkin was getting the homework wasn''t adapted to pumkins needs either. Some of the things mentioned in the report we do not agree with as we are seeing things at home that pumkin can do. We tried to put pumkin in another school as they have facilities to meet pumkins needs, as the school that pumkin is in does not have the resources and time. We don''t want pumkin to full behind any more and we do not have the money for private tuition. We couldn''t get pumkin into the school we wanted. Just at a loss what to do at the stage , would you push for a statement so pumkin can get one to one help. ? its just such a long process going down that route. Any one been in a similar situation ? Any advice would be grateful.Seahorse x

push for a statement, make a fuss, a lot of our children really suffer in education, get what support you can for them, nothing is quick and nothing is easy, call in everyone, gp, paed, OT, speech therapists, post adoption workers...the more the merrier, some of our children are some complex with their needs you will need robust proof of their difficulties.good luck.

Agree with April. My 7 yr old ds was unregistered for reading this time last year. His statement started last September and now he's reading age 7.His school report this week showed huge improvements in all areas, albeit still below average.Get every ounce of help you can. It can always be removed later if no longer required, but it can help kick start the learning.I queried things I know my ds can do at home but school were flagging up as needing help. I figure home environment and school environment are totally different and if he can't manage things at school that he can at home then school is where he needs the help.

is it your child's educational needs or emotional needs that are not being met?ask for an earlier IEP meeting and look at what is in the planspeak to the senco and/or designated teacher for LAC who may have some understanding of children who were adopted having been LAClook at the education resources recommended on here - in particular the 'lets learn together 'booklet on the AUK home page and Louise Bomber 'Inside I'm Hurting'looks like they need to put more support i9n place or you have to consider a move

Would you consider home education? That is another option which more and more people are turning to. We home educate our children and can go at their pace rather than the pace of the national curriculum. There are networks of families home educating and so there is no problem with a social life and friends for the kids. I believe it is particularly good for adopted kids in that they get to spend more time with you and attachment difficulties can be worked on.

If you get a statement you can name your preferred school so that might help. It doesn't always have to be a long process. Once we had finally got the school to start ours it went through in just a few weeks. Unfortunately you have to make a fuss and be very vocal to get anything it seems and that can be really wearing and hard.Statements and one to one don't solve lots of problems though and can even create some. Eventually we plucked up the courage to home school and I so wish I had been able to do it sooner. Ad is a different child.
