Asian Couple looking to adopt

Pip1 January 18, 2010 18:54
Hello, I hope some can help guide us.My huband and I are both British Indian (Sikh/Hindu) and would like to adopt in the UK. We live in an area with very few Asians and having contacted my LA, was told they dont have many children fitting our profile. I''m not sure what I should do now, do I contact voluntary agencies nearby or will other LA''s consider us? Which is the best route for us. I have considered calling LA''s in other areas with a higher Asian population but not sure they will take us. Does anyone have any similar experiences they can share with us? Thank you.

Our experience isn't quite the same as we're not Asian, but amazingly there were NO children in our LA for adoption. Our local LA carried out our assessment and then we had children placed from another LA. I would have thought that contacting a VA was the best way forward. Maybe phone the AUK helpline. I'm sure someone will give you better advice.

Hello Pip1Definitely look around at both LAs with higher Asian populations and also VAs anywhere, as they usually work on a more national level. And ultimately, once you get approved, you can put yourself on the national adoption register (which, as the name suggests) has children from all over the UK. Your LA may not be willing to fund your approval process becausew they know you are unlikely to be matched with a child under their care, hence you may need to look for another LA. Best wishes, S

Hi SuviMany thanks for your help. I have made contact with another LA nearby and am waiting to hear from them. If this doesn't prove successful I will contact some VAs. Fingers crossed.ThanksPip1
