what infant school to choose??

Hi all, some advice really.I have done a search on here re school choices but most of them are regarding children with some kind of statement. However we are looking for a infant school for Lo who has no "massive problems"He has the usual attachment difficulties and is not the greatest listener and gets upset around new people and strange places (prefers to be at home with me all day if he had a choice)and we have 4 schools in the area that he can go to.2 are catholic schools which doesn''t really bother me regarding the religion but they both have good reputations and filter into a fab secondary school.(mind one of them was joined to the nursery he went to and he hated it there / teachers were very "old school in their approach - and in the end he refused to go and I had to move nurseries - so don''t know if the school joined to it would be any better???)One is right near our house and a lot of his peers from the area will be going, and the last one is a bit further away but has a good reputation for disabled children. One in the area is awful - they dont reply to phone calls and seem really unprofessional and I would rather he stayed at school than go there - but strangely enough our next door neighbour is the school secretary for the juniors and is lovely and would prob be able to keep an eye on him.anyway, I have a meeting with one this week and the rest in September but really needed to know what questions to ask to see what kind of school they are.As I say, he has no major issues as yet so don''t have anything definite to tell them about him.Any help would be appreciated

If you are in England, adopted children have the same priority as LAC for school admissions from Sept 2013 - so if you are looking for sept 2014 and in England you can pretty much choose the school that best fits little one. May apply in Wales too, not sure but does not apply in Scotland or NI as far as I know.Whichever school you go for, make sure that the SENCO (statement or not) gets a copy of the booklet `lets learn togther' You will find it in the resources section of these boards.Jellies

Just wanted to say that a lot of children don't seem to show any particular worries until their child starts at primary school - it's the having to comply (even nurseries are much free-er and kids can pick and choose), the sensory demands, and the large number of other children. And it gets less play based as you move up the school. Not saying your child will struggle, but I would be cautious re thinking that he will be okay as he is okay now.I personally would have a problem with Catholic schools if you are not Catholic - also, the ones round here do tend to be more old fashioned and not so tolerant of challenging behaviours, but maybe that's just the schools I know.Being good with disabled children can be good, can be bad - does it include challenging behaviours? Some schools say they are good at special needs, but they have little experience of early trauma but think they know what they are doing.Awful school - might be better once you look round.Good luck with your decision.

Every child / school is different so I would suggest arranging a visit to each one where you can talk to the head / deputy. Have a list of questions - I am sure a search on here would throw up some ideas. But definitely ask about sen provision and their behaviour policy. Tell them about your child and the minor needs he now has, and how you think they might possibly develop, to see how they respond. I suspect you will then get a feeling that one or more of the schools could be right for your child. I don't think a neighbour working in the juniors is any sort of asset - office staff at my school see very little of the children generally, and all schools could have nice / not so nice staff. It's the head / management's ethos that makes a school.
