A walk to the corner shop fortunately wearing trainers !

steps March 8, 2018 17:14
Many of you followed my posts in Oct and Nov when our eldest son was in Icu on dialysis for 3 weeks then had 5 more weeks in hospital with pnemonia, needing blood transfusions etc. He has learning disabilities and he moved back to his supported hostel just before Christmas. He had to use a wheelchair for 7 weeks -had carers coming in 3 times a day to help him dress, cook his food, wash etc. He moved on to walking indoors with a Zimmer 5 weeks ago. Today he walked to the corner shop (about 200m) with his support worker ! Using crutches He was fortunate to have got his trainers back. Having given up alcohol his addiction is now playing poker with other residents. Last week I got a tel call from the physio to say he couldn't do physio as he had no trainers-yes he had gambled them away ! I arranged for the cheapest pair of trainers to be delivered the next day through Amszon-amazingly faced with such ugly trainers he got his original trainers back ! So 19 weeks after being very close to death he has managed to walk outside! The carers and support wotkers are learning how to support him.He has Adhd and Odd so supporting him is challenging. But we are grateful to them and their ability to see past his angry outbursts and find creative ways of getting him to do his exercises. He will need crutches for another 3 months . Will have a permanent limp and some nerve damage. He still only weighs48kg so is very underweight. And we have to gradually back off ,let the support workers do his every day support and rebuild a relationship with him that is not about giving him treats all the time ! When he was in hospital he had lots of people turning up with snacks ,Starbucks and cakes. A friend of ours gave him a PlayStation game for starting to walk without the wheelchair. Now we need to be there in the background but be his family spending some quality time with him going to football or out for a meal occasionally,. He will take a while to adjustbto the lack of treats !his understanding age is about 10! Thanks again to those of you who have encouraged us in our journey over the last 4 months

Thanks for sharing your ds progress Steps - hoping he can now build up his strength and be more mobile. Hope too that you and the rest of the family are in a better place with all the stress and worry you've all been through - albeit there are still challenges ahead. Love and strength Mxx
