Autism Assessment

Mary October 29, 2019 11:04

Hi all,

I was wondering if any of you have had to get a private Autism assessment due to NHS taking too long. I was informed at the time of the assessment by the doctor, that the assessment was in the remit of Adoption support, and they should pay for it?

My little boy was on the NHS waiting list for an assessment since Jan 18 and we couldn't wait any longer due to needing to consider secondary school placements. Unfortunately, it was confirmed he did have ASD.

Any info or advice would be very welcome.

Thanks

I think you’d struggle to get the assessment funded by adoption support or ASF assuming you’re in England.

I’ve paid for private assessments for my child - in her case it was a Slt and an EP assessment. Have you checked that your LA will accept a private diagnosis? Some do, some don’t. Now that you have the diagnosis will you apply for an EHCP?

Hi Donatella,

I am already in the process of EHCP and it should be finalised today with ASD as the primary area of need. During a meeting with the LA, they recommended I get a private assessment due to timings with him moving up to secondary school. They gave me a name of a company they use sometimes and agreed to accept his their assessment. The doctor who assessed him did say that Adoption support might pay though, so I was wondering if anyone else had gone down that route.

Thanks though.

I don’t think the ASF pay for assessments that are provided by other services and especially if he has already been assessed - if you check their website they give a list of what they can help with. My daughter had an assessment from the adult autism assessment service which was free and done really quickly. She subsequently had a private assessment for ADHD as the local MH services would not refer her for one (we asked for the Maudsley) - it was about £500 but done really quickly
