can we pay for support in school

maxxy July 4, 2013 11:18
HiWe and the school are worried about how my 6yo is going to manage in school next year. To date teh school have been able to accommmodate him but yr 2 they won''t have that capability. He is academically very bright so is 2a in reading 1b in maths with literally minimal time effort spent at it. He struggles with writing and doesnt want to doa nything that involves writing - he will literally refuse to do things he doesnt want to do or finds difficult and tries to spend his time reading on his own. Ideally he needs someone to keep him on task and see him through the tantrums that will initially occur when he is kept on task. He is seeing dev paed sho says there is no diagnosis she can give at present. School say without that they can''t get extra funding support. So we have to chase all thsi through this doctor and CAMHS etc. In meantime we thought could we pay for his support? Has anyone come accross this? Maxxy

We funded a LSA for 1 term for ED while waiting for her statement to come through.I assured school that I wasn't planning on publising the fact (though also wouldn't sign up to complete confidentiality).I was clear that school were the employer. LSA didn't even know that we were effectively paying her.

Well they would say that wouldn't they! It may be easier to access support with a diagnosis but its not impossible without one.Have you thought about applying for a statement? You can start the process and apply. You don't have to wait for school to decide to do it, or not. Also try your local parent partnership fir help and advice.

Hi thereDo a search for my posts as I asked the same question in December and got sme helpful replies.I am in a similar situation to you in that my child struggles at school but has no diagnosis yet. She really lacks self confidence and so refuses to do tasks as she is scared of failure, and so really needs support to help her with this.I have a good relationship with the head and fund a TA for her two mornings a week. School also provide her with other small group support the other three mornings. This has made a big difference and she finally seems to be accessing the curriculum which she wasn't doing before. She too particularly struggles with writing and we think she may be dyspraxic. It is hard for het as she is bright and knows the answers, but is unable to write it down and that embarrasses her,The TA works at the school part time anyway supporting a child with a statement. I also spoke to the school about getting her extra lessons over the summer as she is pretty behind and don't want her to start next year on a back footing. Her class teacher has offered to give her private tuition over the summer.Hope that helps. Good luck x
