I need to take my LO to toilet at school

wiltflower July 23, 2013 20:42
Hi my LO had a fracture, his school said he can attend, he can''t reach to sit or stand at the toilet. The school have said, the teachers cant lift him, so i need to come in when he needs the toilet and lift him, he is only part time, 3 hours.am very very annoyed, anyone else have any experience of mainstream schools that have this view.

Given the time of year, ie school holidays (has yours not started?) I'd just keep him home. No, it's not helpful or particularly inclusive but unless its a very long term thing and he's only part time, does he really need to go?

Ouch, hope your LO is okay.Until my LO got a Teaching assistant in place at mainstream, I used to have to attend nursery every day so I could be on hand to take LO to the toilet. This went on for months! I thought at the time that it was pretty poor, but I think the feeling was that the nursery teachers would be out of classroom for too long if they were taking LO, potentially leaving the other children under-supervised...Actually it suited us quite well from an emotional/attachment point of view for me to be a nursery for months with LO, but really annoying for you to have to do this...Could you ask if there's a spare teaching assistant in the school or as Donatella says keep him off if it's a short term thing?hope you get something sorted

I think that's pretty poor.My yd had masses of toileting issues when she went to school. They muted the idea of me going up to help her, but I wasn't keen on the idea of being at her (or their) beck and call!In the end, they got some additional funding from gp (if there is a medical reason for the help required, they can access some money from nhs). (That could help in the situation of a cast if it could be processed quickly enough). Presumably, your school has now finished for summer.Classroom TA then took her, - HT had talked about the additional funding being given to that TA, as toileting wasn't really part of her job desc. I don't know if that happened.
