Christening for gay couple''s child

dylancat September 8, 2011 12:45
Anyone decided to have an actual Chrsitening for their child as opposed to a naming ceremony. Had a request from the birth mother in notes made early on that she would like daughter christened. Initially i was dead set against it, finding the marriage of Christian vows etc and our lifestyle tricky to reconcile. However, as it''s for our daughter, we are beginning to come round to the idea. BUT - is there a way of finding a sympathetic vicar to carrry this out in an understadning way? Any ideas? We''re in south east london. Thanks

hi eddybearnot being an anglican/rc I am only going on what I've picked up from other peoplenot sure about RC, but with Anglicans it seems to depend very much on each individual vicar.so perhaps contacting a few local anglican churches and asking the vicar what their policy is on this type of christening might be the way forward, though I suspect some will be quite anti, whilst others may be quite positive, so if your local parish vicar doesn't sound too keen, a neighbouring parish vicar may be OKl

HiI can't see, even if the vicar is not pro gay lifestyle that they would be negative about blessing or christening a child.I'm not into Christenings myself, but instead we had a "thanksgiving for the gift of a child" CofE service and that was great. We are a hetro couple but tbh that had no impact on what happened that day and all our friends and family thanked God for the children. It made no commitment on behalf of the child and instead encouraged people around them and us to support and love and pray for us.Chose all our own songs and enjoyed "reach for the stars" by s-club vicar of dibley styley...Hope you find somethingPear tree

You may also find Methodist churches sympathetic but again you'll need to shop around. Hinde St in Central London would be a good starting point.
