There seems to be a little bit in the news on this subject. I caught a report yesterday that in some schools they are causing anxiety for children. If only government and staff would take this on board along with the harder curriculum. Our DS finds long spellings hard and would benefit from practising simpler spellings. Homework is a problem and we have to do what we can without a meltdown. When I spoke to school about this I was told he will need to do a lot to practise for SATS. My thoughts to myself were we will do what we can but a happy secure child who enjoys time away from school with family has a higher priority.

Completely agree. Little one recently did his year one phonics test. Iâm told by the teacher that it caused him no stress. I know being asked to read 40 words that he couldnât read would stress him a lot. His report included reference to the ânational standardsâ. I wanted to draft a reply along the lines of needing some acknowledgement that as his first few years parenting was well below any expected standard thereâs no way a few years later heâd be ticking their boxes. Iâve already made a decision that this next year Iâm helping him by starting where heâs at, even if that means ignoring some of the homework/practice that is at too high a level for him. My understanding of little oneâs class is that about a third are below expected standard, which tells me the bar is set too high. Also the girls seem well ahead of the boys.
