first teacher/parent meetings of the year

Here''s one, or two, of my other worries. This week coming we have appt.s at both schools to meet with class teachers. I have a 10 minute appt with ninny''s teacher. Somehow, in that 10 mins, I need to find out how the teacher perceives ninny, give a bit of background, tell her of my concerns that ninny is not happy, and suggest that the topic of "before electricity" which is to include work on families trees may open a can of worms. Then DH and I have an appt with washie''s class teacher, in which I wish to thank her for her proactive input in the recent review meeting, and ask how else she can help him integrate into the class more. We have also requested to meet with the Head to ask what the school are doing to tackle the intolerance amongst the pupils for anyone who is "disabled".Any ideas how you do all this in just 10 minutes?

I think if it was me I would ask if I could see the teacher at another time as you have a lot you would like to discuss. Some teachers may not like this but many will be happy to do this.I am a primary teacher and I have always asked parents who I know will need more time to see me at another time; usually children with special needs. Sometimes after school, sometimes before school starts. This is better for every one as it is hard to keep to just 10 minutes for most children; and going over the time causes long waits for parents coming later. Also seeing at another time means there is less chance of other parents listening in to conversations, which with adopted children might involve disclosing some very confidential information. You do need to have time to discuss your concerns. With my dd I have done this every year. This year I asked to see the teacher at the beginning of the year and discussed concerns; but with parent's evening coming up will not expect to have any extra time. All the teachers that dd has had have said they are happy to see me if I have any concerns throughout the year too.Hope you can sort something out.

You can't and shouldn't try. If you want to discuss these sorts of concerns with your children's teachers then it would be better to make an appt outside of parents evenings. Our first ones are due this month as well but I'll use these simply to discuss academic progress.I've already had a meeting with littly's teacher and TA to discuss other concerns and agreed on the way forward at that meeting.

I would not bring this up in the 10 mins but would arrange a seperate meeting after school and say you have a number of things to discuss so they know not to pencil in 5 mins. Can you also ask for the SENCO to be included, so you have all their ears?

I always arrange extra meetings if there are issues to discuss and just talk about class work during the normal consulation time.

Thank you. For ninny, I think I shall go along to hear what the teacher has to say then ask to book a further appointment. I think for washie's class teacher, it will be fine - not much for her to say really, and we'll just see how the Head takes what we have to say, and how long he gives us!
