Surnames

LovingParenthood February 25, 2015 22:35
Hi, My partner and I still have our own surnames as neither changed them when we had our Civil Partnership. We're adopting siblings and want them to have both our surnames (Double barrelled). Can we do this or do at least one of us need to change to this first?

Ours sons have double barrelled, I would say go with what's most comfortable for you both.

We are going through the same discussion at the moment. My partner and I kept our own names after our CP but we were wondering whether going through this process that we needed to change, to have the same surname of the child/children we will eventually call our own. I like the idea of a double barrelled surname so that the child has both of our names but will this cause problems in the future (passports, schooling etc) if we don't change ours to be double barrelled?

With passports, all you should need to do is take a copy of their birth certificate which will have both of your names just in case anyone questions it. I'm not even remotely concerned about it and as i mentioned before, our son is very proud that he has both of our names.

We both changed our surnames by deedpoll before our boys moved in with us and once adopted, they were given the same double-barrelled surname. It's great, as they both love that we are the only four "blah-blah"s in the whole world and at 5 and 7 years old, they understand that our family surname is made up of my partner and mine's previous surnames. At passport control heading out on Eurotunnel recently, the officer said "you all off for a boys' holiday, then?". I don't think they clicked that we are a family :)

My kids are double barrelled, and we are not. Sometimes I wish we all were double barrelled, but I'm self employed and my name is my work. I have to be flexible, people make mistakes with some or all of our names all the time - even my mum! Never had any issues with passports etc. The kids love having both our names though. x

Hi, We're had our two now for a year and a half and we double barreled our names for the kids and not us. So far we've had no issues and the kids appear to be fine with it. We're in a civil partnership at the moment and we may change it to a marriage and when we do this we may change our names but were all happy with the current situation.
