assessment of need

what,if anything, has anyone gained from this assessment?I have, in the past, requested our LA to carry out an assessment of need for dd . They have never done this but instead say that they use CAMHS for their assessments.dd has had input from CAMHS but nothing much in the way of assessment.she has full time 1-1 support in school (funded by school). Paed has recently had a meeting with senco regarding dd and they feel that her needs are not being met. This is a therapeutic need I feel they are talking about.Paed now feels it is time to bounce this issue back to LA and request input.I think we go round in circles and I have pretty much accepted that dd is how she is and we compensate through appropriate parenting. At home things are usually settled although she needs a high level of supervision/support. I do think though that she could possibly do with some help to cope with feelings as she can be scarily violent at times (this usually occurs at school). What could/should we expect from LA and a formal assessment and can they pass the buck to CAMHS?

I didnt realise that therapeutic input could be specified on a statement. Would it specify who would provide the therapy?

Yes! I worked in the therapies department in two special schools. we had speech, physio and ot. the statement identified how much of each therapy was required. each child had an annual review where the form teacher, other specialists and therapists would prepare a report. this was presented to parents who could request more/different input. if this was agreed the statement/school approach could be changed. eg behavioural problems . OT for calming strategies or to help child attend in class...eg physical. PT or & OT for specific mobility, upper limb, feeding, writing techniques etc...eg speech problems SLT for communication aids or sign language or help with speech....some schools also have a summer programme so attendane could be requested in the review....

camhs input is difficult to secure as there is usually along waiting list. camhs staff are not usually based in schools but have close connections with them. keep a mood and behaviour diary ie ehat happened? how did this make dd/you feel what might have helped??? this will help you to build up a picture of triggers etc that could be presented to the teacher/sw/camhs staff.

So does the LA have to carry out the assessment or can they place the responsibility onto CAHMS?

the la is social care and camhs is health.... the la sw can do some assessments but others will need to be done by a mental health professional. so it depends what assessment you need. its complicated! hope you get what you need sooon.

http://www.baaf.org.uk/res/lawShould give you all you needAn assessment of need should include All the global family needs- it's specifically laid out what it should include....Camhs are sometimes not very up on helping adoptive children let alone their families. In our case, Camhs have very much been our best local support.Ss awful here and the placing la were even worse.Therapeutic route seems to lend the better level of understanding in general I find...
