Adopting a child close in age to the youngest child in your household

Hi all,

Just reaching out to see whether anyone has ever had a match approved with a child very close in age to the youngest child already within your household.

I know the normal guidelines are to have a minimum of a clear 2 year age gap between the youngest child you have (in our case an adopted child) and the child you are to adopt.

Our youngest is about to turn 4 so I guess that rules us out in terms of being able to reach out for any children over 2 years of age?

Is that the case in your experience also?

Thanks so much.

I think there can be some flexibility. I have just over 2 years between eldest and middly and under two years between middly and youngest BUT that was child specific. It’ll all depend on the needs of your existing child, any new child and what family finder is looking for.

We adopted with an 18 month gap a few years ago.

We adopted a child 19mths younger - arriving 6mths apart. Again special circumstances as they were full siblings living in different LAs who had never met. I’m sure it was in their long term interests but very difficult in the short term. As Donatella says - it does happen but generally child specific. It’s worth discussing with your SW and if a child seems ideal in every other way then maybe applying - depending on how well you can take rejection and of course on how you feel your existing child would cope - you never know - if a child seems the ideal match for you it might work the other way too and you may look the ideal match for their SW
