Keeping AS a year behind

KG81 August 30, 2013 19:50
HiMy little is 3, due to start reception in September 2014. However some professionals and nursery think he would need another year in nursery, and I totally agree. (Global development delay and he''s a summer baby)We are due to fill in inscription paper in October this year and start the statement process around December.Would that need to be postpone a year?Where do I start?I think I will need to have a chat with the head teacher of the primary school, but is there a process to follow?Would be gratefull for any helpThank you xx

I have just responded to you on the main board, but can be more specific here.If you have strong support from nursery and professionals etc then you CAN fight for this if you strongly feel it is what he needs. Our son absolutely needed another year in Preschool and it is the best decision we ever made. We took on the LEA (it did cost us time and money, but so worth it) and he is going to start Reception 'out of year'. If we have problems keeping him in that year group when he goes to secondary, we will fight the same fight again when the time comes.I don't suppose he has a summer month birthday? That would help. Even if not, they HAVE to consider all the evidence and do what is in his best interests. There is a google and Facebook group (type in 'flexibility for summer born') that has a huge mine of information and support, which could help you even if he is not summer born. Many children hugely benefit from being 'out of year' due to their specific circumstances and as a LAC/PLAC child they must give serious consideration to this.PM me?
