National Insurance Number

Hi, I am very upset at the the moment that HMRC has 'lost' my AS. He has not received his NI number, when I rang they could not find details of him as his adopted name. It was only when I mentioned that he was adopted and they looked under his birth name that they 'may' have found him. They could not confirm this. Has anyone else had this issue? I really don't understand how this can happen. If this has happened to you, what other agencies do I need to check with to ensure that the same 'mix up' hasn't occurred?

Dear Santamonica,

I understand and sympathise with your upset about this.

My AD recently got her NI number but it was in her birth family surname. We phoned HMRC and they sent a revised version within about 10 days.

It's strange that your son's NI number wasn't sent to your address, even if in the wrong name. I think that as long as you're getting all health, education and banking correspondence, you should be fine, once HMRC have corrected their mistake.

Best wishes,

Alison
