Preparing kidlins for (Crying!) baby!

toomuchlaundry September 16, 2016 11:35
Hi all, Well, we're just 4 weeks off due date with surprise birth baby! I've been thinking a lot about how our little ones (7 and 8, DS has ASD, amongst other things, DD probably does too) are going to cope with baby inevitably crying.... I think they might find it very overwhelming, as they both have sensory issues, but I also think they're going to need lots of reassurance..... Any thoughts? Practical tips? DD will wear ear defenders, but DS won't! Any other general thoughts? Thanks, TML

Would one of those awful electronic baby dolls that cries be a conversation starter, might even find the real thing us not as annoying! More seriously, and not knowing how their sensory needs are, do they have somewhere already set up as a 'safe/quiet space' tent/den etc that they could retreat to in daytime with CD player and suitable choice of music? Good luck for the new arrival x

Hi Sunshine, Good ideas, I especially like the quiet area to retreat to thing, tho we've never quite mastered it, as the two of them can never leave each other alone to have the space they already desperately need!!! Ho hum.

Just to come at it from a different angle.... You may like to consider ways to minimise the crying. Generally new borns only cry when hungry, need a change or a cuddle. A sling or baby carrier can really help with this, they love skin to skin contact too. If you are able to breast feed that will help as food is readily available rather than having to heat milk etc. If you can have their cot on your room or even better get a co sleeper cot that will help with night time feeds. Hopefully by the time the baby reaches 5/6 months old when the crying can be triggered by other more difficult to solve problems your older children may have become a little more accustomed to it. Big congratulations on your growing family. Best wishes G x
