A bit of the fantasy

bovary July 13, 2013 12:50
As a prospective adopter, one of my fantasies was of DS and I riding our bikes together, going swimming, running, lots of outdoorsy fun. DS has steadfastly refused to cooperate with this fantasy! He has been too anxious/controlling to be able to accept swimming lessons, having me help him learnt to ride a bike etc, and for him the world is a scary place, not an exciting one - it''s the way he''s hardwired. So for him a blissful day would be spent wired up to the Wii, no matter how hard the sun might shine. But in the past 2 months he has agreed to have swimming lessons, and is now a confident and competent swimmer - he was just ready for it. Then last weekend, he learned to ride his bike without stabilisers.Last night night after school, we rode our bikes to the local open air pool, swam for an hour, sat by the pool with ice creams, then rode home. It was blissful. This morning I realised it was a little bit of that naïve fantasy I had, and it only took 3 and 3/4 years to get there!

Thanks all - things really aren't all that smooth here, to be honest - this weekend we have had tears, tantrums and wet pants aplenty! But it does feel easier, and having some shared interests and activities is lovely - and good for my health too!
