Minor CRB rant

Corkwing July 9, 2013 14:21
Why, why, why do so many organisations waste money on getting their own CRB check done? I understand why they need a CRB check, but when you''ve had one last week for one organisation, why on earth does the next organisation need to do another? The chances that I''ve gone out and done something despicable in that one week must surely be pretty slim? And why, having had a CRB check to see if I was a fit and proper person to become a school governor, do I need another one, done by the school, before I can go in whilst there are pupils around? And the documentation! I''m finding it increasingly hard to provide the relevant documents as more and more stuff is done online these days. I''m sorry: I don''t have utility bills any more. They''re all in cyberspace. And as they won''t accept printouts, it''s almost impossible to find the requisite number of documents in the right classes. And then to refuse them over petty differences... I have a surname that can be spelt in different ways. My council tax bills have always come with the wrong spelling and, really, I can''t face the potential nightmare of trying to get it corrected. But it was really annoying for a CRB check to be refused because of a one-letter difference!Come on! Let''s have some sanity about this process.A frustrated Corkwing.

Can I join your rant??I had 1 full enhanced check 11 months ago for voluntary work through 'x' County CouncilI had the same done again 6 months later through the same Councty Council.I had a 3rd done (again enhanced and again - you guessed it through same CC!!) 5 months after that (yep - 1 month apart)!!!) for other voluntary work....and hey/behold I had another done 4 weeks ago although not through the CC, this time scouts org...but again a full enhanced, all performed on-line to could see my account and the full printed version.......unfortunately we live in a blame culture and its 'cheaper/easier' for orgs to think lets be safe and do another CRB rather than use common sense or to understand what the process actually says! From another disgruntled, thoroughly CRB'd person!!!!!!!!!!

I can maybes shed a little light on this. CRBs have changed to DBS (Disclousure and Barring Service). This opens the opportunity for passport enhanced checks. However it is the responsibility of the person to join and pay membership for this (£15 a year has been the suggestion but don't quote me!). Whether this has come into play yet I don't know. But passport allows you to give a code to employer and they log and check it. I've done training on this as its my job. There are also loopholes as to wether you need one or not depending on your activity. But I didn't learn much about this as I work with vulnerable adults and think you should have one regardless of activity! Reasons everyone requires separate one is due to the one you have will have a company name on. If they are using one with a different company name on it voids the insurance. So I'm told. I might be wrong on any of the above so don't quote me! :-)

I totally agree, I think I have had 5 in the last 12-18 months. My understanding is that the new DBS scheme will issue 'portable' checks so they can be used by different organisations. I seem to remember that CRB's started out in much the same way and then organisations started tightening up their safeguarding policies and therefore requiring a CRB for each seperate one. As a safeguarding officer for my church I have checked over 30 forms in the last 12 months and it is so hard for people to get the required documentation-I end up chasing them for weeks which just slows everything down grr

Anyway surely cases like Ian Huntley prove the utter pointlessness of CRB checks? What made me laugh was the fact that my CRB as a secondary teacher has to be done at least every three years when I am rarely if ever alone with students; my friend works in a nursery where she is changing nappies and dealing with wet pants on a daily basis and hers only has to be done once every five years!!! Meanwhile mum is a Guider working with Rainbows and hers hasn't been updated for 10 years!Pear Tree - consider using CRB certificates as documentation :-) our LA accepted one of mum's CRB checks as one of her pieces of documentation when my SW wanted to get her CRB checked so she could look at CPRs with me.The system is bonkers.

I'd second what PollyPocket just said - I believe the 'passport' system is coming in imminently (July?), so an individual can pay an annual registration and then any new employer or organisation can check them online without having to have another one done - worth it if you are changing jobs, taking on a new role requiring DBS etc. Should reduce some of the costs, at least, the old system was bonkers! I could paper a room with my old CRBs!

I've just had a DBS disclosure done and joined the update service (£15 if you pay but seemed to be free as my check was for a voluntary position). Other organisations can now do a quick online check and then look at my paper disclosure. hopefully it will save so many repeat checks.

Corkwing if your online utility bill has your address on it as I understand it - it should if been accepted. I often find people are a bit jobs worth & very nervous getting it wrong by not having what they see as the correct documentation. I show my other CRB's as a form of IDMy church are saying DBS aren't portable .... Yet another organisation or person not understanding it ? What gets my goat is the DBS says the form must be completed/countersigned by your employer or doctor of teacher if you are not employedSame old blah blah that unless you have a degree you can't fill a form in. Passports are the same. Ok off to bed if you could just help me down from my soap box Come the revolution ............
