Help with CAMHS please

doubletrouble July 26, 2013 15:19
We live is a rural area where CAAMHS don''t have much experience of children like ours. we have 2 both with ADHD, attachment problems, sensory integration disorder and at times (like now!) very volatile relationship between them. I have been trying to get therapy for them - sensory attachment therapy but there is no one near that does it and CAMHS don''t think any therapy will help. Have been trying to change DD''s meds back to one we felt worked better, and generally get some guidance on how to cope but the consultant we now see - head of Dept. Doesn''t feel any of my suggestions will make any difference and thinks that we have changed meds. too much - last change two years ago.She thinks the positive parenting course we went on last year and the advice we have been given in the past should work when trying to stop DS from having aggressive impulses and being violent toward all of us. When he tried to break his sisters wrist ( had to go to hosp. for x ray) because he thinks she has a marble of his what sort of talking does she think will work!We are at the end of our tether and the beginning of the holidays. Last year DH ended up in hosp. with a stress induced illness after the hols. This year things are worse. Where can I go for medical advice when I am at the end of the road with local CAMHS?Children are 10 & 8 have got SS involved but they can''t do anything about therapy or drugs. Help.

Thanks so much for the PMs both of you.I will look into your suggestions.I just feel so disheartened as I know other children have benefited a lot from various therapies. DS has had art therapy but didn't think it did him much good and I think he needs some thing more specific for his impulsive, aggressive behaviour towards his sister. We can't afford to go private. When someone's rational for not going ahead with a medication is that she thinks it is a waste of time, that there is little difference in the affect of different ADHD drugs but I know there can be a massive difference with our children and I'm sure others have said the same.

gOSH! YOU COULD BE DESCRIBING TWO OF MY KIDS 7 AND 3 YRS THOUGH.WE HAVE JUST HAD SS TO FUND SOME DAYCARE FOR ONE THROUGH HOLS AND ALSO PUT OUR OWN £ INTO SOME SPORTS DAYS SO THEY HAVE SAME CONTACT AS IF THEY WERE AT SCHOOL.I FIND THE FIRST TWO WEEKS THE WORST AND ALTHOUGH FEEL BAD I CANT DO MORE NORMAL STUFF LIKE DAYS OUT THINK ITS PRETTY GOOD TO MAINTAIN SANITY LIKE THIS.HAVE YOU ASKED PAEDIATRICIAN TO GIVE DIRECTION TO MORE SUITABLE SERVICES AS THEY HOLD RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE KIDS? WE JUST MOVED FROM A RURAL SPOT TO TOWN FOR THESE REASONS AND IT HAS HELPED A LOT.I KNOW ITS TOUGH IN THE STICKS AND I FEEL FOR YOU.WE FOUND A SPECIALIST OT VIA CAMHS WHO ALSO WORKED FOR CHILD DEV CENTRE AND DID SOME TRAINING W HER.BUT STILL WHAT THEY REALLY NEEDED WAS 1-1 INPUT. PERHAPS ANOTHER CAMHS COULD DIRECT YOUR OWN? OURS WAS VERY POSTIVE BUT LIMITED .WE JUST BEGAN AN ALTERNATIVE MARTIAL ARTS COURSE THAT WORKS ON PLAYFUL TRAINING AND POSITIVE REINFORCING, WE PUT BOTH KIDS ON THE MAT AND THEY ARE NOTICEABLY CALMER TOGETHER ON THAT DAY. I WILL ASK IF THERE IS ANY CLOSER TO YOU IF YOU SEND ME YOUR REGION?KIND REGARDS DONT BE TOUGH ON YOUR SELF OVER THE HOLS. HOPE THAT WASNT TOO WITTERY...

thanks lankelly for your post. Would be interested in the martial arts idea. will pm you with our area. Unfortunately as they get older the aggression and argumentative behaviour seems to be getting worse. I will speak to the paediatrician and see what she suggests. Thanks again.

Try getting hold of NICE nhs guidelines for ADHD and the equivalent body to NICE in the nhs near you. These might help you argue for the support you want. We ends up going private for about 8/10 months until Camhs appointed a psychiatrist with attachment training. Hope you find something that works

HiI think barnardos in that are are much more clued up and offer free supportPerhaps give that a go?Talking therapies don't work in early trauma.(Margot Sunderland said so)Kim Golding pyramid of therapeutic needsIs worth showing under their noses....But in the meantimeCheck out barnardos
