CHOOSING SCHOOL FOR CHILD WITH ASD

amrac1 June 12, 2013 15:32
This is very short - I -promise! My 10 yr old DS has recently been diagnosed with ASD. He hasn''t learnt anything at school for 2+years and consequently we are in process of applying for a statement. He is currently in year 5. My question is what is the best sort of school for him? What are the options for both next year and for secondary education?

Depends on what his other needs are and how his asd is expresses. There are autistic spectrum kids in every type of secondary provision, from mainstream with no support right through to residential units with 2:1 support. You really need to find out what your son needs and then find the provision and ask for it to be named in the statement. Also depends on what is available locally - unless you want him to go to residential. Also, the lea may not agree with what you want and if you want something a bit more out of the ordinary, you may have to fight for it and demonstrate the evidence.

If the Local Authority agree to do a 'statutory assessment' for a Statement then push for your son to be seen by an Ed Psych, a Speech and Language Therapist and an Occupational Therapist as part of this statutory assessment. These reports, in combination with the detail of your diagnosis, will start to show your child's needs. Good reports will also state what Provision a school must make. Focus on getting a good quality, accurate Statement. Recommend joining your local Autism Support Group to get the 'inside track' locally on the Local Authority attitude.
