Anxiety and Returning to school

Bluemetro September 10, 2020 20:43

Just wondering about other people's experiences have been on returning to school. AS is in year 8, has ADHD, ASD (possibly PDA as avoidant due to anxiety, but in our area they don't diagnose it). He finds school hard as reading is poor, as well as organisational skills, so had huge anxiety about returning for school. He has not made every or full days this week. School have been good at keeping in touch.

Just wondered what experiences others have of support at this time where it is socially distanced.

Our grandson (JM) attended school all through the lockdown as he was classified as vulnerable. For the most part, he was fine throughout and into the summer holidays. However, when school restrated a few weeks ago, things have gone downhill. Firstly, he knew it would be different and he was prepared for that. But it has been a major trauma for him - not only were many more children now attending school, but to maintain separation, start and finish times were staggered as well as playtimes/breaks. He also had previously a dedicated TA (teaching assistant) but now he has two different TA's. The combination of these factors has dis-regulated him and set him back 12-18 months. He manages to hold it together during the day but come the evening and bedtime, he becomes violent and distructive. Our daughter and son-in-law manage to calm him down eventually, but he often doesn't get to sleep until 9.30-10pm. The school do not seem to appreciate the major turn-around from the boy they see during the day to the boy that lets fly in the evening. Hopefully, with the love and care that they are gving him, things will settle down. It just goes to show how easily our troubled children can be unhinged
