Diabetics - how precious is your driving licence - warning

As an insulin dependant diabetic, I am very careful about testing as I need my driving licence for my job. Thanks to an incompetent person at my GPs surgery who completed my driver medical form incorrectly DVLA revoked my licence which immediate effect. Even though there was no truth in what they put in the form on my medical records. It has taken me 2 very stressful weeks to get my licence re-instated, with lots of cancelled medical appointments/work meetings, etc.Initially I was advised by DVLA it would take 12 weeks to get my licence back but by phoning faxing and being annoying they made me a priority case. Plus a phone call from one of my diabetic team helped. My advice to all driving diabetics is to make sure that it is clearly noted on your medical records that you have not had hypos with medical assistance in the last 12 months and that your symptoms of awareness for dropping blood sugars are noted too - do this when you are applying for the 3 year review of your licence. No one at my surgery has given me an apology and they want me to take time out of work to get over this stress!!!I have been lucky that on most days my employer allowed me to work from home and only struggle on public transport on days when it could not be avoided.Living rurally with poor public transport did not help - so much for having the infrastructure there to stop using our cars!Hope none one else has to go through what I have just been through.I just has to post to advise fellow diabetics and anyone else who has a rolling 3 year licence due to a medical condition. It was so good to get behind the wheel today - now I have a stack of phonecalls to make to rearrange all the cancelled appointments.hb

How very stressful.I think there is a lot of fear around diabetes and although it is a serious condition as long as you take care of yourself then really the risks are low.the diabetics I know who are poorly controlled wouldnt contemplate driving and the ones who are well controlled- frankly- it doesnt stop them living a fulfilling life.enjoy driving!
