Ok I am mortified to find that pair of shorts (along a many other bits of clothing) that were ''comfortable'' last summer are just toooooo darn tight. I do exercise but obviously not enough & just eat too much & the wrong stuff Any experience of which group I should join ? We don''t as a family eat much fish & 1 of us is sort of veggie. We eat a lots pasta, potatoes & rice. Boy we are fussy. I''m chief cook so if I''m on a diet we all are. Is there much difference between either weight watchers or slimmers world ?

A friend of mine has done brilliantly using the weightwatchers app on her iphone. She seems to be able to eat what she wants as long as she tracks her points carefully. She was meticulous about it, totting up even the odd chicken nugget stolen from her boys left overs. She's gone from a size 18 to a size 8 in a year!Meanwhile I am gradually going in the opposite direction

What about the 5:2 diet. 5 days you eat normal. Though I would say you need to be sensible. Then 2 days eat only 500 calories. So boiled egg for breakfast then eat again at dinner time what the family are eating minus the carbs. Seems to fit in well around the family.

Yep, the Fast Diet (sort of the 5:2 as above)- brilliant!

Hi- what do you eat on the 500 cal day? Is fruit n veg counted in by weight/ calorie? What about the 'normal' days? Having well hit the 40s and unable to run and cycle due to too many children syndrome! A good 10lb has stuck! Ew! Just so can't shift it! X

The Fast Diet is easy in that for 5 days you eat anything, and on your 2 fast days you eat 250 cals for breakfast and 250 cals 12 hours later. The book has a small selection of recipes, but I loathe counting calories so I tended to stick to a small repertoire for weeks, till I got bored (mainly porridge with blueberries for breakfast and poached eggs on toast for supper). now I admit I often look for stuff at supermarkets eg Innocent noodle pots, M&S salads etc, which are calorie counted. On my ordinary days I really do eat anything - hot chocolate, cake, takeaways, anything. And the science behind it looks quite compelling - good impact on cholesterol, blood pressure etc. You lose weight very gradually, but it really is pretty painless. On the 5:2 diet, from what I have read, you can spread your 500 cals throughout the day rather than 'fasting' for 12 hours. But the non-fast days look pretty frugal to me. No wonder you lose weight fast, but I wonder how long I could stick to something so strict.

i have done a few diets . but slimming world has worked best for me I lost my weight 3years ago and I have managed to keep it off.I found sw to be a change of how you cook things and I eat more than I used to. Everyone eats the same in my house I don't have to cook different. ie I can have bacon (fat removed) egg beans mush tom for breakfast if I want.xxxx

I've been considering WW online (have about 1.5 st to shift).I'm put off the 5/2 by the thought of being hungry on my fast days. Do you not get obsessed by food on those days?

Do you know, it's really not that bad. Essentially, you are just skipping lunch! Choose a day when you are busy and you will probably not even notice till early evening, then it's time to eat. Not being trite, but that has genuinely been my experience.Worst things for me is dong the fast on 2 consecutive days (hard), or on a day when I have not much structure to my day, when I can obsess about it. And I would not do it on a day when I know I have social commitments which involve food, I would just rearrange the day.And when the going gets tough, you just tell yourself how much you ware going to enjoy that food tomorrow.

Having read the fast diet book last night to detract from eating the Cornish pasty in the fridge- it's an odd science! It's all about blood sugars and making your body work more efficiently- and yes I was hungry - but didn't wake up ravenous and also was less hungry than usual today! Very odd... Going to keep going! Thanks for your thoughts. Been thinking about my diet. Large amounts of nuts, chocolate & vino at the weekend, gobbling up kids left overs then eating my meal & eating very lateSo no need to be Sherlock Holmes to work out perhaps if I paid a little more attention to the shopping trolley it might help. DP fancies the 5:2 diet so I will look into that Thanks again

I've just done my first 500 cal day.Not as bad as I thought it would be. I can see that if you choose your days carefully it should be quite doable.

I have just been reading about this today...and as my doctor is really getting fed up with me for not loosing weight..(lost a serious amount of weight three times in my life and put it all back on)I am tempted to give it a try.Can you tell me how much weight you have lost Toast and average loss per month Bovary..ta..am not looking for a quick fix because we all know they don't work...best of luck LMcheerful..well done on your first fasting day..anything that doesn't involve, sins...having your weight loss told to a crowded room, wieghing of portions, staring at labels in the supermarket, red days, green days, and slimmer of the month certificates has got to be worth a try..

Hi- I too lost a huge bundle of weight in my 30s- and have mostly kept it off - it's the 3 children that seriously scupper my healthy lifestyle- no time to exercise (I used to run, mountain bike, cycle to work and was a gym babe...) now! Ha ha ha! I Hoover left overs as I have no time for me- exercise is my personal defence league against mess and toilet drips! And I am the wrong side of 40!So... The 5:2 diet! Have now lost 5lb and am eating well on the 5 days! Yay!!!It's ok to do- just avoid the tea and coffee hits! Milk adds up! X

I have lost half a stone since May - not huge, but then it is very easy and I would rather lose it gradually than lose it fast and put it all back on again. My weight fluctuates a lot depending on what day of the week it is but I set myself targets like (on my non-fast days my weight doesn't go over x amount) - not telling you what!!!
