Does anyone know about section A139a please....

Dd has a statement for 25hrs 1:1 support + taxi + chaperone due to EBSD, ADHD and dyslexia. She has to leave her current local school at 16 and apparently we need to complete "section A139a" to request support at college as the statement is not transferable to the college sector. Does anyone have experience of how this system really works, as the college is telling me they will simply do their own assessment. We also tried a school 6th form application (for vocational courses) but they looked at her statement and said they were unable to provide the level of support.I think in a new, more grown up college setting dd may well survive with slightly less intensive supervision, but she is still pretty risky in terms of the kinds of scrapes she can get into. On the other hand I''m worried that asking for such intensive levels of support will affect her chances of being offered a place on the course she wants.Any advice/ideas?

Hi LetticeI haven't dealt with transition from school to college for some time, but from memory in England planning should start at yr9 statement review. I think that connexions take the lead and they can advise on how well local colleges help students with additional needs. They also have information on residential colleges whose courses are geared up to help students who have had statements in school. So contact your local connexions and your council should also have a Parent partnership who offer support and advice for parents of young people with additional educational needs. Good luck on finding out what A139a meansRhubarb

Mr AS is also 16 yrs & leaving school in a few weeks. He has a statement for emotional & behavioural difficulties & 23 hrs 1:1 support. School have been brilliant with him (& also supporting us).He is in touch with a connexions advisor who has also been brilliant. She has completed a section 139A report for him & forwarded it on to any of the colleges that he is applying to. She met with us (parents) to discuss & check that teh contents of her report were acurate & detailed his needs accurately before passing tit on.However, at one of the college interviews, the college staff didn't seem to know what this report was & what it was for. Which for me seemed abit strange. Also the support that one of the colleges were able to provide was very different to another college. So they do vary in what they can offer in the way of support. Not sure whether any of this is helpful or not. But I can confirm that knowledge of this the section 139A document only (near to us anyway) seems to be known about by the school & conxions team.Ged

Thanks Lettice - that's really helpful.I get the impression that support at college may be forthcoming but it's the getting there that is going to be the big issue!
