very long term fostering

Jet October 11, 2009 19:49
hi,I mainly identify myself as an adopter but we fostered one girl who we did not actually legally adopt ( partly because she had close relationship with some of her birth family especially her Grandma who came to party too) - she came aged 15 supposedly till she''d done her GCSESanyway today we had a surprise 30th birthday party for her helped by her children who are now my grandchildren as I have helped her over the years I have often thought this is indeed longterm fostering Jet

How lovely to hear. I think there are the extreme ranges of adoption vs fostering being totally different, but then within the range there are adoptions and fosterings that have more similarity... in fact some agencies seem to positively seek out carers/ forever families that can offer long term placements that last right through adulthood, which sounds good to me ;-)mtw x

That is great, Jet. I know quite a lot of FCers who look after teens who are involved with many years later. The stories can range from yours to FCers who visit them in prison and even one I know who is just taking on fostering the grandchildren (children of previous LAC). Hilly7

25 years ago we had a short term placement - as we were approved short term foster carers. It was only supposed to be for 3 months. We have been involved ever since, now raise her daughters and have done the visiting all over the country. She still has difficulties unfortunately, and a lot of issues were exacerbated by poor care/ lack of understanding from SWs. Knowing what I know now, I would have tackled the SSD in a less respectful way.Johanna
