Intercountry adoption problem?

azahid October 21, 2011 21:46
My wife and I are UK citizens but have been living and working in Sudan for 7 years. We still have a house in Newcastle and come back 3 times each year. In Oct 2010 we adopted a baby boy from an orphanage in Khartoum. He has a Sudanese passport with a UK visa for visits. We plan to continue living in Sudan for a couple more years but wish to adopt him legally in the UK. This is mainly because if my wife and I died then we don''t have anyone in Sudan to look after him, while in Newcastle my brothers are available. Plus, we might decide to come back to the UK at short notice because of potential political problems in Sudan at the moment. We have contacted a solicitor in Newcastle and they have approached the local authority on how to proceed. Can anyone give some advice on our position? This is probably a bit of a unique case. Sudan is not a member of the Hague Convention on intercountry adoption.Thank you!

If you have been living overseas for a period of time with a child, then you do not need to go through the UK approval process. You may need to re-adopt in the UK because the adoption may not be recognised here, though.I would approach the UK embassy for information on how to get him citizenship, too.
