fostering a family member

turbo July 16, 2013 12:34
it looks like my teen nephew is going into care I would like to put myself and hubby forward to look after him but we physically don''t have the room we have 2 boys and they share a room and we don''t have a spare, what can we do any ideas? I would hate if he goes into care, his mother doesn''t seem to worry (she has a new partner and baby) and is father has been AWOL since he was a baby! I am feeling useless!! he is not a bad kid just been neglected of motherly love!

About ten years ago we were going to foster our nephew and space was an issue. We were offered help in extending our home - social services told us to get a loan and they would cover the repayments. Due to a change in his circumstances he didn't come to us after all but eventually went back to birth mum.Perhaps contact social services to let them know you're considering having him come to live with you and take it from there. Be prepared for lots of questions and meetings - you might have to be assessed as foster carers and will have CRB checks done. You should get an allowance to help with his clothes, food etc which used to be a lot less than the fostering allowance but I think this might have changed.Let us know how you get on.
