why? a sports question

amh July 1, 2013 23:01
Can someone explain why a football match that has 22 players only has a maximum of 4 officials yet tennis that has only 2 players ( 4 in doubles) can have up to 11. can''t see the logic myself but why?

officials in football can run up and down the line or up and down the field of playTennis officials have to stand still and watch one particular line in the grass/clay/other surfaceso being mobile you don't need as many as you do if they have to stand in a set positionHowever, it could be that when football was set up in the 1800's there wasn't much money around and it was generally a working class gameTennis was an aristocratic game and so perhaps had more 'Bertie Wooster' types who had nothing better to do than give their chums free access to tennis matchesThese are only my theories, and it could be that the fairies were playing silly games when deciding which way to split the 15 or so people between players and officials

speeds are alot faster in tennis.serves can be over 100mph.the points in tennis are about in/out on the lines, not so critical in football, which is about goals (and why they are introducing goal line technology - similar to hawk-eye).
