Local authority or agency?

GermanMum August 28, 2009 13:32
Hello, I am just starting the adoption process and am a bit confused when it comes to figuring out how to get ''on the books'' of a local authority (or agency). Having already gone through the initial assessment with my local authority (Merton), they have now told me that where I live is ''too close'' to the children on their list. A bit frustrating since I now have to start again. Where and how did you all successfully achieve the assessment stage? Did you go through a LA or an agency? Which one? I really appreciate your answers and help!

Hi there,I too am just starting on the process. I initially contacted my local authority who were very nice on the phone, but haven't got in touch as they promised despite a follow up call. I took some advice and cast my net wider. I called a couple of voluntary agencies, one of whom I felt immediately drawn to. They were very helpful, enthusiastic about my application, and sent me the information pack within a couple of days.I don't know how things will progress from here, but I think the advice to cast my net wider was good advice and made me investigate what is out there and what agency suits me.Hope this helps!

How frustrating that your LA couldn't have told you you lived too close right at the outset! My local LA were disappointing - like you, I was initially hopeful, and went to an info morning, but then was told that they had 'several other families offering the same resource' as me, so they weren't planning on proceeding with me. I then approached several other LAs, a couple of which did not call back as promised. One stood out, though, as being very pro single adopters, and I have had no regrets about going with this one!Cast that net!
