Social services background check

fmalone February 7, 2022 02:07

Hi all. Myself and my partner are looking into adoption. The adoption agency requires that prospective adopters undergo a social services background check. I had some involvement with social services as a child and I'm worried that this may reflect badly upon our application. My partner doesn't know of my previous involvement with social services. I was wondering if anyone on here has any knowledge or experience of this? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi. I think the first thing you need to do is be honest with your partner. The assessment process can be invasive - necessarily - and if there are any secrets between you and your partner, then they’ll be exposed . And SS will question why you haven’t discussed this and wonder what else there may be.

There’ll be lots of checks - maybe they’ll want to contact family as well - but they’ll want to discuss your backgrounds, your upbringing etc so it’s important that you’re honest with each other and with the sw.

It won’t necessarily impact badly - I don’t know what the involvement was so hard to answer - but being secretive might.

Good luck
