In retrospect I think in the past I probably could of done or should of explored counselling consequently I have no experience Could anyone give me a few minutes to explain what happens in both adult & child sessions I am assuming that for an adult they help you explore an area that concerns/affects you and empower you to deal with a situation another way - is this too simplistic? Children for aniexty say - if the child can't verbalise an area how does a professional take it further. I appreciate you can sit with a drawing and perhaps take it from there but I'm thinking of my 8 yo I'm probably asking how long is a piece of string !

There are lots of different sorts of counselling and therapy, which will all do slightly different things. Adults often have talking based therapies - which can be more/less prescriptive. CBT is popular now as is Person Centred Counselling, but there are lots of options. Children tend to be better with a less talk based option eg play or art therapy. Adopted children (and their parents) can often benefit from therapy to build their relationship and look at the child's life story. Maybe have a search on Google and look at the different options. If you are in England, the ASF can fund therapies - you'd need to contact your local Post Adoption Support team for an assessment in the first instance. Do your research though as not everything works well for adoptees.
