Lending Library

Shortbread June 10, 2010 23:03
HelloI''ve just spent ages looking at the lending library to find suitable books. Most of the books have very little or no information written about them, so I don''t know if they are suitable for what I am looking for. I have had to look at books and then go to other websites to try and find details about the book, in a lot of cases I was unable to do so as obviously some of the books are specialised books. Can i suggest that you add more details to the books and explain a bit about the content, who it is aimed at and the age of the child. A lot of the books do neither or only one of these things. I found it impossible to successfully browse the lending library, it only seems suitable if you know what book you are looking for. As a new adoptive parent I don''t know what books would be most suitable for my needs and would like to have browsed the library without having to do internet searches for more information. I was trying to find suitable books for my 5 year old, I nearly contacted you to order a book which gave a comment about general adoption, but on checking against another website the book is actually about a child being accommodated after witnessing/experiencing domestic violence, not suitable at all, I would have wasted my money as I could not read this with my child.I think it would also be helpful to have postage costs and the timeline for posting the books. This is standard practice on other websites. Even though I am a member of AUK I have never loaned any books but hoped to do so, but reluctant to do so because of the time it has taken me to try and find the books and then concern about how long it would take for books to be posted to me, it leaves me thinking is it quicker and not much more expensive to buy them online where you usually get free delivery? I am on leave from work thus finances are tight and I would like to have access to a lending library without having to spend ages trying to find out more detail about books. To summarise I suggest the following things:Easy direct link to library.More details about the book.Timelines for delivery.Cost of delivery.Book reviews from borrowers and professionals. Thanks for reading.Shortbread

Hi ShortbreadI am sorry this has taken a while to respond to you but your post has only just been drawn to my attention.I quite agree with you that the library items need a precis and certainly with new books that have been added over the last couple of years I have done this. We have around 785 items in the library so this is a long job. It would be good if we had volunteers who would be prepared to input this onto our website. As you can image it is a huge amount of work as each book needs to be looked at individually.Regarding children's books, we do have a large number and if you would like to ring our Helpline on 0844 848 7900 between 10.00am - 4.00pm then we can talk about what you require and advise accordingly. Alternatively email on ---- EMAIL REDACTED ---- (please don't private message through these message boards) and tell us what you want a book about.Books can be borrowed for a period of three weeks and we ask that you pay what it has cost us to send the item to you. This is postage plus 20p for the padded envelope it is sent in. A letter is sent with the book giving the return date and the cost. We don't make a blanket charge for postage as this depends on the weight of the book. If the book is available it is sent out the same day. We have multiple copies of a lot of books but some of the more expensive items we can only afford to stock one i.e. Dan Hughes DVD Building the Bonds of Attachment is £80 + VAT!I hope this helpsWith kind regardsBarbaraHelpline Adviser
