what does "bumped up" mean?

i have seen people on this site writing a few times that they are going to "bump up" (or something sounding similar) a message but what does it mean concretely? i think i understand the general meaning but i just don''t know how they do it. thanks for enlightening me...

It is just when you bring an earlier posting up to the top of the board - either for others to see or when a post is in danger of disappearing without replies. You do it by just adding another reply to the post..... I hope this makes sense...Queenie
