johnthai October 8, 2009 10:29
I officially adopted my 17 year old step daughter under Thai law.UK does not recognize that adoption.I would like to adopt her under UK law and do not know where to start.I am also interested in her citizenship which may be easier by the fact she is my step daughter. We are not planning to live in UK immediately due to her education. This is my first communication regarding this matter, and wouold appreciate any leads at all.John

Hi John,The old system for adopting from Thailand was to adopt according to Thai law and then again in the British courts (but I think that was only ever possible once living back here). The new system is within the terms of the Hague convention (where a Thai adoption is recognised by the British courts - but adopters would have to have completed all the relevant British requirements before going through the Thai system.) As neither of these apply to your situation, I would recommend that you join the yahoo group ThaiAdoptionsUK. Most of the adopters on there are resident in the UK, but some are expats living in Thailand and have adopted whilst living there. They would almost cerainly be able to point you in the right direction. All the bestalison123
