School meeting

Hi all! Had a fantastic meeting with school this week, feel quite overwhelmed after so many meetings reminding them what we should be doing etc etc! I went in armed with lists of strategies (already recommended by big team of professionals who have been involved with my son over the last couple of years)... but they totally surprised me by suggesting: he should go into reception class several times a day as a 'helper' (he is year 3), and this should be timetabled in - perfect for him he will do reading with the caretaker, who he loves and trusts he can do pe with other classes if he wants to They will ask all staff to give him jobs around the school his old ta, who he adores, will come and collect him every lunchtime It was so great to see school being so flexible and thinking of new approaches at last, meetings are usually so defensive (on both sides) whereas this felt like a partnership - can't wait to see how my son gets on with this new regime!! Thought I would post some good news as it has been quite a week in the adoption world...

What great ideas, well done you and school. It makes a difference when the school supports the family. Mine is good to a point, but it hasn't come up with imaginative ideas like this. I might just share some of them, they would really work for my son too.

It's great to hear the school have changed their approach. Some of those ideas sound familiar. My son (year 4) is spending an afternoon a week in reception/year 1 class "helping"and sometime recently when he was struggling got to go and help out in the office. I am constantly so grateful that they are supportive.

God love primary school caretakers - I think they are miracle workers and vastly underrated. mr e at my son's old school knew him inside and out and always looked out for him - giving him 'jobs' and making him feel valued and important - this did more for his personal self esteem than any of the teachers did.
