Where to start?

emg1978 December 6, 2017 23:10
Hi, I am a 39 year old single woman. Long story short, since I turned 37 I have had 3 IUI and 1 IVf treatment using a donor to have the child I would love, unfortunately all failed. Although I have 1 attempt left with the donor my heart and mind is more for adopting. I have been researching adoption for several months now but do not know how to start the application process, Can anyone advise me on where to start? agency? local council? I am in the Essex area so any information, advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi emg. I would suggest attending some information events at a few local authorities and voluntary agencies. These will both provide further insight into adoption and give you a feeling about which of them you think you would like to apply through. I would be probing them on their provision of post adoption support and training. First 4 adoption is a good site http://www.first4adoption.org.uk They also have a search for agencies near you http://www.first4adoption.org.uk/find-an-adoption-agency/ You might want to go outside your own LA, as you might otherwise be restricted in children you can adopt because of birth family living nearby. You don't say when your IVF finished - and you don't need to share here - but be aware agencies usually ask for you to be about a year past this to allow time to come to terms with it. But that does not prevent you from going to information events and reading up. All the best.

Heard positive things about the barnardos project in that area. Maybe look at their open evening?
