Info about ancestry testing needed

Hi - I''m hoping someone can help me with this one. We have recently had a 21 month old girl placed with us. I am from a duel heritage ba ckground and they think that our daughter is also from a white and asian background. The local authority have given us some money so that we can do an ancestry test on our daughter as we feel it is important for her to know what her ethnicity is. But we don''t have any informaiton about which is the most accurate and effective ancestry test to use. We would like to be as specific as possible and the form that our social worker gave us seems very broad and general and a bit gimmicky. Has anyone else used any reliable companies - info and advice much appreciated please. Thanks a lot

No personal experience, except that colleagues in the forensic field are cautious. This page explains some of its limitations:http://www.ehow.com/about_7239411_reliability-dna-testing-ethnic-heritage.html

My friend had her genes tested, just out of interest, by 23andme. She is of Middle Eastern origin but found quite a few Northern European genes. They also give you the genetic risk of disease but I imagine you can ask not to have that info if you don't want it (or if the LA won't let you have it). It's a US company but they will deal with UK and other customers.

i think BAAF has a clear position statement that genetic testing for ethnicity is not ethical and rarely helpful

i search family history and my worry with this is it will give you her ancestors history as well.it may not nessassarily give you her parents.my advice would be for you to speak to your local gp and get a referel from them to a private cliic

Can someone explain to me why it is not ethical to test your childrens ethnicity?By the way is 'race matching' ethical? I have my doubts especially when it is impossible to find a match for a child because of the right 'colour' is not avaliable. I think it happens quite often that social services or the birth parents themselves are not sure. Especially if kids are made during one night exotic flings.

not sure on ethical issues - i was concerned that if they did the test before being matched to us they might decide we werent a good match (depending on results) but our daughter is so like me - it might be useful to know what her exact mix is to help promote that side of her, but our la didnt do it due to the cost mainly, but i dont think it is very accurate anyway
