Stealing - long post sorry

bellagio August 27, 2013 20:47
Having a little struggle lately. CAMHS agreed to see us again after saying last year that as lo has a diagnosis of disorganised attachment disorder they could not help us. My GP re referred us and the family therapist is querying possible ADHD and we are being seen again in 6 weeks so we will see what happens.Just returned from a short UK break and he was ok until the last night so we stayed in the apartment to calm him down.Today he went out with my parents and my dad has found a cigarette lighter in their garden, turns out lo was looking at them today and when my parents weren''t looking he stole one! I asked him why he would steal it and he smirked and laughed in my face and said it was fun, he is 6. I have to admit I am fuming. 21 months in and 2 months post adoption order and here we are.Feeling so annoyed and frustrated

I can empathise with the frustration and disappointment you feel. I would say it is good that he's being checked out for a possible ADHD diagnosis. If he is diagnosed with ADHD, medication can make a big difference. It can help with impulsivity and the sort of theft you describe can be the result of an impulsive, opportunistic behaviour. The medication, Ritalin, certainly helped my two adopted children. Hope you get help and support.Lily x
