Author and adoptive parent seeking contributions

Press and PR Officer January 25, 2012 15:47
Dear All, Please see below for a message from Rosalind Powell – an author currently writing a book about her experiences of adoption and particularly transracial adoption. Kind regards, Erika PenningtonPress & PR Officer I''m a writer, journalist and adoptive mother of a 9-year-old boy. I''m currently writing a book about my experience of adoption. I have written six chapters, which have outlined my family''s story so far - our failed IVF attempts, the assessment process, our son''s first years etc. In my next chapter I want to explore the future and some of the concerns/questions I have about what might happen. As such I want to talk to other adopters/adoptees and include their experiences in my chapter. The main areas I want to cover are:Identity and race: Our son is of mixed heritage African-Caribbean and my husband and I are whiteI''d like to talk to white adopters of older, mixed race children and to any mixed race adoptees who have been brought up in a white family. How did they all manage the differences? And how do the adoptees identify themselves? Were there any problems? How did this manifest itself? Things they''d do differently?Rejection: The prospect of the teenage years terrifies me. I''d be really interested in talking again to adopters/adoptees about how they tackled the emotional upheaval that can be adolescence. Also the whole issue of Facebook and how that has opened up the potential for tracing birth family members. Is anyone experiencing this at the moment?Meeting/searching for birth family - how families have dealt with this, and the different outcomesGrandchildren - I''m interested in exploring how it feels to be a grandparent to your adopted child''s children. Are there any issues of not being a "real" grandparent in the way that, when you first adopt, you can feel like you''re not a "real" parent? There are bound to be other areas that crop up along the way but these are the main ones so far. What would be great would be a variety of experience, and it doesn''t have to be all good.If you''d like more details or would like to discuss further, please don''t hesitate to contact me.I look forward to hearing from you.Best wishesRosalind Powell---- EMAIL REDACTED ----
