Shared parental leave

Momma February 9, 2020 12:07

I just thought I would share with you our plans for leave when our little one arrives.

Dad is main adopter taking 6 weeks leave at 90% pay and transferring the remaining to shared parental leave.

Mum is taking two weeks paid paternity leave (adoption) followed by the remaining 46 weeks shared parental leave. (33 weeks of this are paid).

The adoption leave and shared parental leave can be taken simultaneously. So we will both be off together for the first 6 weeks, panel loved this as it gives dad chance to bond.

I have checked that this is allowed with ACAS.

The link below is the form that will need to be filled in and given to your employer.

Hope this helps some of you.

We have struggled to get our heads around the shared leave option, and even though I work for a large organisation Payroll said that very few people have taken shared leave.

I don't suppose you looked into the taking leave in blocks of 3 months at all? We are considering doing that with the shared leave so we each take 3 months at a time. As one of us goes back to work the other stays home, repeating until we have used up the leave.

Hey Momma, that's very interesting and very helpful. It's true that Shared Parental Leave is a bit confusing. We are doing the last checks ourselves as our employers seem a bit clueless.

My partner is the main adopter and will take Adoption Leave for 14 weeks. She will then curtail her leave to create Shared Parental Leave for me (so 52 - 14 weeks=38 weeks). I am obviously entitled to ShPL.

1) Do these 38 weeks include the 2 weeks of paternity leave? From your initial post, I understand that it comes on top of the 38 weeks.

2) How much do you get paid for these 2 weeks of paternity leave? Is it SAP so £150/week?

3) Is it sure that I can be on ShPL from day one so we can spend the first 14 weeks with our child?

Thanks a lot if you can help us clarify all this

Johnathan and Mark- it is true, not many people take advantage of the shared parental leave.

You can take the leave in blocks,

If take a look at the ACAS form there is a section where you can fill in the dates for the blocks of leave. The dates are not binding.

ACAS are also great at offering advise and HMRC recommend the use of their forms.

You are correct the paternity leave is two weeks and is on top of the shared parental leave and a separate form needs to be completed. The paternity pay is SPP £148 or 90% of your earnings whichever is lower.

You can take shared parental leave from day one so you can be off simultaneously.

When I filled the forms in it made a lot more sense.
