Request from journalist

Press and PR Officer July 12, 2018 13:55
We've had a request, below, from a journalist who is working up a story about "two women who supported each other online, but who now face a brighter future and who feel their friendship has been a very important part of their recovery or the journey they've been through". Please contact Mel on ---- EMAIL REDACTED ---- or 07974 088890 if you're interested. Request deadline: Thursday July 12, midday Good morning, I am still looking for some wonderful friends who've supported each other online but never actually met. I'm repeating this request for Prima magazine in case anyone missed it first time, and also casting the net a bit wider to include more categories. This is my request: So many women these days turn to forums for help and support, particularly when it comes to health issues. I am trying to find two women who supported each other online, but who now face a brighter future and who feel their friendship has been a very important part of their recovery or the journey they've been through. The idea is that they won't ever have met in person, until that is we bring them together for a fabulous, fun photo shoot for the magazine. They should be aged 30-60 and happy to be named and pictured and chat over the phone. Obviously, the charity they met through will be very clearly signposted in the piece, and this piece will be a very positive celebration of the power of friendship and support. Please email me your thoughts asap to ---- EMAIL REDACTED ---- or I am on 07974 088890. Thank you Mel Mel Hunter Freelance Journalist

Am I the only one that finds this patronising - they've never met until we bring them together for a fabulous, fun shoot? Pictures and names all over the media? The whole point of the forum is that it's anonymous. Most of us are grown up and intelligent enough to arrange to meet if we so choose without a media loving intermediary. Or are we anxious for a new twist on long lost family?

I agree. I think it’s pretty vomit inducing frankly! As it happens I have made friends through these boards - anonymously originally but that did move to meet ups. In private. Without cameras or journalists!

No doubt, this fabulous, fun photo shoot will include hair, makeup and clothes. Then there will be the usual lists of stockists of said merchandise and services. Everyone’s a winner.

I think what's so disappointing is that we do get these requests on the boards from time to time and AUK should IMHO be explaining to whoever is making these requests that its not appropriate, rather than posting the requests. Anonymity is an issue!!!! Very occasionally I think I might enter a prize draw or something and maybe the small print says in the (unlikely) event of winning you must be willing to be photographed...err no thanks!

thing is - what if the real person, as opposed to the on line persona, turned out not to be quite what you expected and you hated each other within 5 minutes of revealing your true identities ?

It’s not a suitable site for this project - anonymity is paramount and part of what it’s all about for adopters
