Genetic Testing

Swimchic March 27, 2019 14:05
Hello all, We took daughter to see a private Paediatrician last week as she may have Asd. Due to DD background, the Paediatrician asked if she had any genetic testing ( we were discussing the possibility of Fasd). How do we go about getting this done? Is it avalible on the Nhs? Thanks Swimchic

Hi. Yes, it is available on the NHS. My daughter is currently under a geneticist. Microarray screening didn’t show anything but he’s asked to see her again to do some more tests. We were referred by our paediatrician. It can be a lengthy process!

The FASD clinic ask you to have completed a microarray screening and Fragile X test before you attend for assessment. Our GP initially referred us for these blood tests (with the FASD clinic requirements in mind), only to find that the lab wouldn't complete them because the referral had come from primary care, not secondary care. So our CAMHS consultant authorised them in the end, and now we are awaiting results. I am really hoping they come back clear, because otherwise I think we will have to wait for a geneticist to explain them, making a long wait even longer... sigh.

What does a micrarray screening and Fragile X test involve Chocoholic? Daughter is already under a Paediatrician, so would it be best to have the referral from them? Swimchic

https://www.nationwidechildrens.org/family-resources-education/health-wellness-and-safety-resources/helping-hands/microarray-test-analysis Both tests involve a blood test. My daughters paed referred for both microarray screening and fragile x prior to that. Not entirely sure what paed will be testing for next but just going with it!

Thanks Don. And yes, Swimchic, if you have a paed already, use them, it will be simpler. It's just a blood test and (around here) a 2-3 month wait for the results.....
