What's your biggest challenge around Christmas?

bluelizard January 6, 2020 10:06

Well we survived it, it does seem to get easier year by year. When AS was little he used to get ridiculously excited and the build-up involved lots of disregulation, not helped by school ramping it up.

This year, the biggest problem has been getting AS out of his PJs and outside for some exercise.....the teenage years.....

Christmas itself has never been a trigger for my kids - nor have birthdays. What’s been difficult in the past is all the stuff they had to do in primary school - the nativities etc. Tbh I was absolutely delighted to never have to sit through another one ever again - three times round was more than enough!

Thankfully two now in secondary and one away in uni I don’t have to endure any more!

This year was different as my eldest was with his gf and the younger two no longer believe so it was far more relaxed and adult in lots of ways. Less magic but actually far easier. No creeping around trying to bring presents out, no more building various bits of kit!

It was good

I agree with the Primary School bit. DS started Secondary this year and the evening Christmas thing was voluntarily and he decided he could not cope so that was o.k.

The run up to Christmas was still challenging here even though DS knew what he would get and pretty low key. The mental health was the biggest problem here and not wanting to leave home for much exercise. The highlight was the day just before Christmas when he decided to walk to local shops and bought us Christmas cards and took a long while writing in them.

School back today and although last night needing reassurance and some regression he went off happily today unlike Primary and I have been able to enjoy some Retail Therapy with a relaxing coffee.
