PE on first visit to new school

Mummamoo July 2, 2013 11:48
Nininoo is spending her first transition day at the juniors today. She already knows the school from when washie was there, all her friends are also moving up, and she has met her new teacher, but........they are doing a PE lessonIs it just me, or does this seem a bit much for 6/7 year olds to manage in an unfamiliar school? Do they not have enough stuff to think about without having to do the physical changing clothes thing?

Maybe it was meant to be fun?

Fun? Lovely! Burn off energy? Great! But I would have thought there are other ways to do that rather than a full-blown PE lesson. How do you feel getting your kit off in a strange place? I wouldn't feel comfortable. I just think this will have added an additional bit of anxiety.

Sounds like a good way of them losing half their clothes at the new school.... Badwolf

"Lovely" meant to be "lively"Most children at 6/7 strip off and have no issues about it at all. Thinking this teacher might be of the lively whoop whoop type of teacher, is that what dd is expecting?

I hope they suggested the children go to school in gym clothes? When my son had a lesson from his new teacher for the next year she did fun stuff with them, half of the class who will be with another teacher had to complete maths! DS certainly thought he had the better experience. I hope the day goes well, our little ones go through so many changes, it must be so challenging for them. We are now on school holidays in Scotland, and boy am I relieved! DS had been unsettled for about 5 or 6 weeks, he didn't fall asleep till after 11p.m. every evening, quite exhausting for both of us

DS just advised me last week that most of the kids in his class wear their gym shorts under their skirts/trousers, apparently he was one of the few who actually had to change into shorts. It had never occurred to me to suggest that to him! I wonder if lots of kids do that, or if its just DS's perception...

Our school always does PE on the first induction day, it is done in an attempt to grab and engage the more "active" students, whose anxiety is often that the work will be "too hard". However, we don't make them get changed - all the games are things which can be played in uniform, eg basketball shooting, badminton, team games. It seems a bit much to have to take PE kit as well!

Ds did his second induction visit to junior school yesterday and was incredibly anxious - it turned out he thought he would be tested to see if he remembered all the things they'd been told the previous week - names of teachers, where the classrooms were etc. My poor anxious boy. He was mightily relieved that they did worksheets!

Well, it seemed to go OK yesterday. Ninni has issues around getting changed after some boys laughed at the girls' tummies months back. It rained during their rounders game and she was very cross that she didn't get her turn at batting. Guess who she took it out on
