FAS diagnosis

Hi all. Our daughter has suspected FAS and we finally have an appointment with the community paediatrician. We''ve already seen the Early Years Inclusion Service and Ed Psych (who have both produced reports following their observations) so this is the next stage. This is the first time that we will have seen the paed. and we''re wondering what will happen next. Afterall I would imagine this appt will be a matter of 15 -30 mins whereas the other sessions were 2 -3 hours as she was observed etc. Can someone enlighten me as to what to expect and what further tests/investigations etc would be done before they would likely give a diagnosis. Thanks

Hi roller,My son now has a fas diagnosis after having a Probable FAS diagnosis as a baby. He was 4 when he got the fas diagnosis. We see several paediatricians. One is a general medical one who looks at his health needs, one is a school/health link doctor who does the developmental checks (long appointments) and the other is a community paediatrician who overseas everyone else! All of these appointments are yearly. None of the paediatricians felt they knew enough about fas to give a proper diagnosis but they had no doubts he had it. He was referred to a genetics expert who examined him, asks many questions to make sure he met the clear criteria that is set for fas and agreed that he did have fas. If you do a search you'll find a few threads about fas, if I can help please feel free to ask.

Thanks for your response. We believe she is at the lower end of the scale and I went to a FAS parenting session to gain as much background as possible. We're planning on going on the appointment armed to make it as successful as possible and not get fobbed off. We're happy to ask for the referral if necessary.Hopefully though we will have no issues with it.

Hi, new to this... Have 2 adopted children, girl age12 and boy, 9. Girl has learning difficulties, full statement at school, tho no concrete diagnosis. Boy ok, but, although seen peads in CDC yrs ago - they said he's no problems, we feel there's something 'not right'. He's very small, uncoordinated, and has some odd emotional issues. I have a feeling it could be due to fetal alcohol syndrome, and not sure what to do next... Go back to GP at this stage? Would love advise, or to hear from someone in similar situation!

The problem with a FAS diagnosis is that it won't bring much help with it.My daughter has a range of problems and is currently being seen at a genetics clinic, where they suspect FAS, and at CAMHS, where they suspect autism.I am indifferent to getting the FAS diagnosis but I do want the asd diagnosis, as that will bring loads of help and support with it. There is an autism act, which means that local authorities have to provide asd services. There are good support groups for autism. There are schools which specialise in asd kids. There is a lot of understanding of challenging behaviours by other people when you mention autism.I am not aware of anything similar re FAS.I understand wanting to understand FAS etc - just saying that there may be more helpful ways of labelling your child's behaviour. Has anyone ever considered asd?
